Is intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of an animal other than by providing nutrition (e.g., joint support, calming effects, digestive aid for specific ailments, pain relief, skin conditions).

The label lists 'active ingredients' and 'inactive ingredients.'

Include dosage instructions (e.g., 'give X ml twice daily,' 'administer X tablets per Y lbs of body weight') rather than feeding guidelines.

Marketed as a supplement or treatment with a specific therapeutic purpose.

Contains ingredients that are not generally recognized as safe (GRAS) or approved food additives for animal feed, but rather have a pharmacological effect.

Let’s look at some considerations

Do any of the following considerations apply to your product?(Required)

Product attempts to blend elements of both animal feed and animal remedies (i.e. lists active and inactive ingredients and states it is be mixed in food or claims are nutritionally-based.

Product does not have all of the required elements within a legal category (i.e. has guar. analysis but no calorie content)

Product makes claims such as “human grade,” “support digestive health,” etc.

Product contains new/novel ingredients (i.e. MSM, Ginkgo, Echincea, Slippery Elm Bark)

None of the above

You product will likely be flagged as misbranded or adulterated animal feed by regulators. This can lead to delayed licensing/registration, delayed distribution and potentially, Stop Sales.

Revisions are highly likely to be required in order to complete the licensing/registration process in order to distribute within the states.

Your label should be reviewed to determine if they require substantiation/documentation to ensure that they are truthful and not misleading. Some claims are considered “drug” claims and are not permitted on animal feed.

Your product will likely run into regulatory issues if it has animal feed elements on the label. This may require reformulation or a label revision overhaul. This could easily be determined prior to distribution with a label audit, saving time and money in the long run.

You label may pass but it is always worth an audit to ensure you are removing any potential barriers to get your product to market.
